Northampton’s Christmas lights switch-on, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been deferred due to a forecast of severe weather. The event, which takes place in Northampton’s Market Square, is now set to occur one week later, on 30 November, commencing at 12:00 GMT. Storm Bert, identified as the season’s second named storm, is anticipated to deliver snow, rain, and powerful winds to various areas of the UK over the weekend. Northampton Town Council indicated that the decision to reschedule was made owing to the safety risks associated with potential flooding and disruption. Councillor Jane Birch stated: “Safety is our primary concern and with the forecast of strong winds and torrential rain, we have decided the potential risk to those attending is too great for us to go ahead.” “The forecast is looking much better for the following Saturday, 30 November and we look forward to officially switching on Northampton’s lights and getting into the Christmas spirit, hopefully with a backdrop of some calmer weather.” She further added that five substantial Christmas trees located around the town and at the Guildhall would be illuminated starting 22 November to create a festive atmosphere.
