Martyn Waghorn began his career at Sunderland. Striker Martyn Waghorn has ended his contract with League One Northampton Town by mutual agreement. The 34-year-old forward, who previously played for Leicester City and Derby County, joined the Cobblers on a short-term agreement in early November. During his tenure, he scored one goal across eight appearances. The club, currently under the caretaker management of Ian Sampson following the resignation of manager Jon Brady 12 days ago, stated that the decision to part ways with Waghorn was “amicable.” Sampson commented, “Martyn came in and helped us through the last few weeks and all parties have now agreed to terminate the contract.” He added, “We thank Martyn for his time with the club and we wish Martyn and his family all the very best for the future.” Sampson further described Waghorn as a “first-class character” and “a good man.” Waghorn, who has represented 12 different clubs throughout his career, contributed seven goals to the Rams’ promotion-winning season last year, which saw the club secure its return to the Championship. His sole goal this season came last month in Northampton’s 5-2 EFL Trophy defeat by Burton, and his final appearance was from the bench in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Rotherham.
