Northampton Town’s manager, Jon Brady, whose team is currently positioned 18th in the League One standings, has described the upcoming match against top-ranked Birmingham City as the “ultimate challenge” within the division. Birmingham City, known as the Blues, holds the second spot in the league standings, trailing Wycombe Wanderers solely due to goal difference. Their position is bolstered by significant financial backing from Knighthead Capital, which enabled them to acquire striker Jay Stansfield for £10m during the summer transfer window. The fixture on Saturday marks only the fifth encounter between these two teams, and their first since 1990. This game comes after Northampton’s elimination from the FA Cup last weekend by their non-league local rivals, Kettering Town. Speaking to BBC Radio Northampton, Brady stated: “On paper, they are the strongest League One side put together for a long, long time, probably ever, considering the amount of spending they’ve done.” He added, regarding his team’s prospects: “We’ll need a lot of go our way, we’ll need to be at our best, but we’ve got full belief that we can try and get something out of the game.” Northampton is expected to implement multiple squad alterations from the team that started their midweek EFL Trophy match against Leicester City’s Under-21s, a game they won 3-0. The coaching staff’s primary focus is to refine their tactical strategy for the fixture at St Andrews’. Brady, whose namesake, NFL legend Tom Brady, is a member of the Blues’ ownership group, commented: “Teams like Bolton have gone away (to Birmingham), they are a possession based side and only had 27% possession, but if you go man for man, how uncomfortable can you make them? They are things we have to consider.” Meanwhile, Northampton striker Tom Eaves, who has accumulated over 370 league appearances throughout his career, might require facial surgery following an injury sustained during last month’s match against Lincoln City. The 32-year-old player entered the game as a substitute at the beginning of the second half but received a facial injury. He required several minutes of medical attention before he could depart the field at Sixfields, in a match where Northampton was defeated 2-1. Manager Jon Brady stated: “We are waiting for some more information from the specialist but if he does need an operation that will be our seventh operation this season.” Since his transfer from Rotherham United in the summer on an initial two-year contract, Eaves has registered one goal in six appearances for the Cobblers. However, Northampton has secured additional player cover by recently signing former Derby County forward Martyn Waghorn, a free agent, on a short-term agreement.
