Residents in North Yorkshire expressed that it had been “really stressful” to discover their residences flooded just prior to Christmas, an outcome of Storm Darragh. The storm led to widespread disruption throughout Yorkshire on Saturday, with wind speeds exceeding 50mph (80km/h) registered at Topcliffe, close to Ripon, and Leeming, impacting numerous roadways. North Yorkshire Council has extended assistance to those affected, establishing a local support hub at the Moorside Room on Church Street in Kirkbymoorside. Lisa Young was present at the centre on Monday, seeking provisions for her parents, both aged 68, who she stated were left “devastated” by the flooding at their home in Kirby Mills. She informed the BBC: “The water started to rise in their home on Saturday and the sheer volume of it was just too much, so they’ve ended up with three and a half foot of water right through their bungalow, so everything has just been washed out basically.” Young continued: “They’ve been tidying a few things up but we can’t move anything until the insurers have been to assess everything.” She added: “They are absolutely devastated, they’ve lost everything out of their entire home, oak flooring, furniture, beds, bathroom suite, kitchen, central heating, the whole lot.” Meanwhile, Tom and Jade, who did not provide their surnames, reported that their initial observation upon attempting to reach their Malton home on Saturday was that “the whole street was flooded.” Tom recounted: “When we came home and opened the door all the water came flushing out and all our belongings were floating around everywhere, the dogs were swimming round the kitchen.” He further stated: “It was really stressful to see it all before Christmas as well.” Tom also noted: “Our son, who is only seven-years-old, has been very upset as he has lost all his toys.” Jade expressed her considerable distress, adding she has been left “very upset, and I’d like a bit more help sorting it.” Denise Smith, another resident of Kirby Mills, mentioned she had spent the morning removing mud and silt from her backyard. “All the flooring is ruined, however we still had our electricity so we were very fortunate in that sense,” she remarked. North Yorkshire Council announced in a statement that the assistance centre would be operational daily this week from 09:00 to 17:00 GMT, staffed by personnel capable of offering a range of advice to homeowners whose properties have been impacted. The statement additionally specified: “For people affected by loss of power in the Kirkbymoorside area, ‘winter warmer’ packs are available from the Moorside Road support centre, and the packs include items such as a power bank, torches, blankets and hot water bottles.” Post navigation Decorative Mug Detaches from Pub During Storm Darragh Barcelona Experiences Flooding While Valencia Rescuers Continue Search Operations
