A new severe weather alert for snow and ice has been issued for England’s north-west region. Meteorologists have implemented a yellow warning, effective until 10:00 GMT on Friday, following recent disruptions caused by the season’s initial snowfall. The Met Office indicated that wintry precipitation anticipated overnight and into Friday morning may lead to travel difficulties. Concurrently, Electricity North West announced that its engineers are being placed on standby for the upcoming weekend, as Storm Bert is projected to bring powerful winds, substantial rainfall, and wintry showers. Storm Bert represents the winter’s second named storm. The first, Storm Ashley, resulted in numerous power outages during October. Additionally, the UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber cold health alert covering the entire North West, which remains active until 18:00 on Saturday. This alert signifies an elevated health risk for vulnerable individuals. Nevertheless, even prior to Storm Bert’s arrival, the Met Office stated that wintry showers advancing into the southern part of the region could deposit up to two inches (5cm) of snow, primarily in elevated areas. A spokeswoman further stated: “Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday morning as temperatures drop below freezing, especially following any showers.” The regions predicted to be potentially impacted on Friday include: Earlier, on Monday night and Tuesday morning, snowfall disrupted public transportation and roadways throughout the North West.
