The relocation of a post office from a town’s main commercial street is proceeding, notwithstanding objections from campaigners who have labeled the proposals “flawed and irresponsible”. The North Lowestoft Post Office, situated in Suffolk, is scheduled to relocate to Bushells Bakery on Tennyson Road during the upcoming year. The Post Office organization stated that transferring the branch approximately 300 meters, which is under a quarter of a mile, to a different location would enable extended operating hours and the provision of enhanced modern amenities. However, those opposing the move expressed significant disappointment with the decision, asserting that it would “be a backward step and rip the heart out of the community”. The Post Office indicated that the existing branch was managed by a temporary postmaster, an arrangement it deemed unsustainable. It further stated, “The relocation would enable us to maintain a Post Office service to our customers in the local community in the longer term.” The organization acknowledged, “With any relocation it is inevitable that while some customers will have an easier journey to the new location, it will regrettably mean a longer or less convenient journey for some customers.” A parking assessment, according to The Post Office, revealed that the Tennyson Road pay and display car park, which includes disabled parking spaces, is situated directly across from the intended site. Opponents highlighted that a branch had been present on the High Street for a minimum of 110 years, and they had encouraged public participation in a consultation and through a local petition to express opinions. Christine Newman, co-chair of the Most Easterly Community Group, commented, “We are very disappointed by this move which we feel will rip the heart out of the community.” She added, “We feel that this is a very backward step and a real blow to our High Street.” The bakery’s premises are scheduled for a complete renovation to integrate the North Lowestoft Post Office, which will include a dedicated post office serving point. The Post Office confirmed that the identical array of products and services would be accessible, along with an additional 16 hours and 30 minutes of Post Office service weekly, encompassing Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, and earlier opening hours.
