A new initiative designed to address shoplifting has been introduced in a section of Lincoln. The North Lincoln Shopwatch aims to unite retailers, enabling them to exchange information and highlight concerns. Stores will receive notifications from the police when suspects are identified and when prohibition notices are issued. Lincolnshire Police indicated that shoplifters in north Lincoln had been exploiting retailers who lacked consistent communication, unlike those situated in the city centre. Each retailer who enrolls commits to acquiring a radio to facilitate easy communication with other businesses. Shopkeepers can share details regarding antisocial behaviour, including descriptions of individuals or the types of problems they have caused. They also have the option to subscribe to a mobile application that the police utilize to compile and disseminate a weekly report. Inspector Dan Gilmore, who leads community policing in the northern part of the city, stated: “By getting the shops to work together there is a feeling of community between those retailers and a shared purpose in reducing crime and improving conditions on the ground for staff.” To date, 16 retailers in the area have joined the scheme, and one arrest has been made as a direct outcome of the program. Councillor Martin Christopher remarked: “We’re seeing positive results already – swift reporting, clear communication, and strong partnerships are making a real difference. “I encourage all businesses to join us in this initiative, and help us build a community network where we can stand stronger together.”
