The final remaining House of Fraser store in north-east England is set to remain open, reversing previous closure threats. An official agreement has been reached for the retail chain to continue operating within Darlington’s historic Binns building. Darlington Borough Council stated that the store constituted a “cherished” element of the town’s heritage and conveyed its “thrilled” reaction that the building’s future had been secured. This announcement follows just weeks after House of Fraser had declared its impending closure in December, a consequence of the former landlord’s decision to terminate the lease. However, the prominent bright yellow closing down signs have now been removed from the premises. Estate agent Parker Barras Estates has been contacted for comment. Chris McEwan, the council’s deputy leader, remarked: “I’m thrilled to welcome the news that a deal has been confirmed to secure the future of Binns.” He further added, “This iconic store has been a cherished part of our town’s heritage, and these latest developments represent a vital boost to our community and local economy.” McEwan concluded, “With this new chapter, we look forward to seeing Binns continue to flourish in these changing times, and long may it stand as a cornerstone of Darlington’s retail landscape.” A spokesperson for Frasers Group confirmed: “We’re pleased to confirm that House of Fraser Darlington will remain open and is operating business as usual. We’re looking forward to continuing to welcome our valued customers to this location.”
