Construction of 180 residences on land owned by the council in Devon is scheduled to commence in 2025. North Devon Council received a grant of £2.2 million in November 2017 from the Brownfield Land Release Fund, designated for this residential project at the Seven Brethren site, situated adjacent to the River Taw in Barnstaple. According to the council, the necessary planning permission and financial resources are now secured to initiate the construction of 125 family homes and 55 flats. The project is slated for completion in 2028, with the residences to be constructed in multiple phases. A significant portion of the 54 affordable properties is anticipated to be among the first to be built. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports that a 328-space car park and a temporary site for travellers are also nearing completion on the same land parcel. Enhanced flood protection measures have been incorporated, comprising a wall and an embankment along the site’s perimeter. Additionally, the homes themselves will be elevated above projected flood levels. Prior to the commencement of construction, the former North Devon Leisure Centre was demolished, with its concrete subsequently recycled for use in the car park’s construction. Trees that were removed have been chipped and utilized for landscaping purposes.
