Police have stated that an assault that took place at a school in north Belfast is under investigation as a hate crime. This incident occurred on Tuesday within the playground of Belfast Model School for Girls. Principal Paula Stuart informed parents and guardians in a letter that the school was “aware of various claims circulating on social media”. She further stated that these claims have “led to increased tensions in our community, negatively impacting on student wellbeing and their sense of safety”. DUP MLA Brian Kingston expressed that he is “very concerned” regarding the “physical incident” that occurred. According to Kingston, there is a “great deal of concern from pupils and parents”. He also added, “It’s important that the relevant authorities work through what occurred and that action is taken.” The Education Authority (EA) confirmed its collaboration with the school and the PSNI, adhering to “robust and established processes and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being” of pupils. Kingston additionally urged pupils and parents to “stay calm” and allow for a “full investigation” to proceed. The EA issued a statement asserting: “It is important to note that, contrary to some reports, there is no evidence to support inaccurate claims or fears being expressed on social media around pupil safety at the school.” The statement continued, “We would ask for support in helping to stop the spread of such information.” Chief Inspector Alan Lowry stated that the Police Service of Northern Ireland is “liaising with key stakeholders in relation to this matter”. The PSNI has requested that anyone possessing information step forward.
