A tulip field, which annually captivates visitors with its vibrant hues, is set to impress cinema audiences, having played a significant part in a Hollywood blockbuster with its nine million blooms. Belmont Nurseries, situated close to King’s Lynn, Norfolk, generates thousands of pounds for charitable causes every spring by providing visitors with an opportunity for ideal photographs. A “viral” video showcasing the candy-coloured display caught the attention of Jon M. Chu, the director of Wicked, who sought an authentic tulip field for his Wizard of Oz origin story. “I still pinch myself that we got involved,” stated owner Mark Eves. In 2022, he and his wife Susanne held a meeting with a location manager and a set designer, subsequently undertaking meticulous planning for the field’s appearance in the film, which is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on Friday. The tulips serve as a backdrop for Munchkinland, with characters depicted running amidst the spectacular blooms. “It all seemed very simple to start with, as we do the field every year, but when you realise the patterns and colours and order they wanted, with nine million bulbs, it was a lot of organisation,” Mr Eves commented. “I was very nervous that we got the right colours in the right place – but it came right in the end.” The 25-acre site was transformed into its own “village” for filming last year, accommodating more than 400 people on set, Mrs Eves elaborated. “They were everywhere, with minibuses moving people from the dressing room to the canteen, people running over the field and cameras all over the place,” she further stated. She also had the opportunity to appear in the film as an extra in Munchkinland, characterizing the experience as “surreal” and “fascinating.” “I’m a huge musicals fan and had seen [the stage version],” she commented. “It puts the Wizard of Oz in a totally different light, and it’s a great film.” Mr Eves additionally stated: “I’ve never had security stopping me getting to one of my fields before – it was quite intriguing. ” “It was a really big team, and it was a sight to see.” “I think we did our best and it came out well.” For updates on Norfolk news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
