A nine-year-old boy is set to participate in a triathlon alongside the mother of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey, having been motivated by her message on mental health. Harvey Goodman, a resident of Warrington, Cheshire, has previously accumulated £50,000 for diverse charitable initiatives across three events since reaching the age of six. Harvey stated that he observed Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, discussing mindfulness at an awards ceremony and subsequently “got really interested” in the subject. Harvey intends to complete a 1.2-mile (1.9km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) cycle, and a 16-mile (25.7km) run during a single weekend in May, with the goal of collecting £30,000 to support children’s mental health and wellbeing. Brianna, who was transgender, was 16 years old when she was enticed to a park in Culcheth, Warrington, by 15-year-old assailants Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, where she was fatally stabbed. Harvey, from Stockton Heath in the town, remarked: “After losing someone very close to me, I wanted to do something big to honour them and to make sure other children get the support they need.” Ms Ghey, aged 38, further commented: “Just knowing that mindfulness and well-being training has really helped Harvey means such a lot to me, because this is the end goal.” She continued: “We want to be able to get this into schools across the whole of England.” The funds collected by Harvey will benefit Ms Ghey’s organization, Peace & Mind UK, which champions mental health awareness, equality, and inclusion. Ms Ghey expressed feeling “daunted” by the endeavor and acknowledged being “not as confident as Harvey”. She remarked, “I think I’ve got a lot more creaks and stuff than him in my body but I think we’re going to do lots of training.” Harvey and Ms Ghey are scheduled to undertake the swimming segment at the Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub in Warrington, commencing the running and cycling components of the challenge from Stockton Heath Primary School. The challenge will conclude at Old Trafford stadium, as Harvey considers Manchester United to be the “best team in the world”. Naiomi Goodman, Harvey’s 30-year-old mother, is involved in every part of her son’s challenges and oversees all training sessions. She conveyed that she was “super proud” of her son. Olympic triathletes Mark and Helen Jenkins, along with celebrity fitness expert Joe Wicks, are also participating. Reporting assistance was provided by the Press Association.
