Former Leicester City and Watford manager Nigel Pearson has disclosed that “learning to walk again has been an incredible challenge” after he revealed he was managing a “neurological situation” last year. Pearson had been using crutches for several weeks towards the conclusion of his tenure at Bristol City. The 61-year-old indicated in October 2023 that he was awaiting further tests to diagnose the health issue, a period shortly before his dismissal as Bristol City manager. Pearson subsequently provided an update on his condition via social media, expressing gratitude to “all the kind people who have continued to send their support during the last 13 months.” He reiterated: “Learning to walk again has been an incredible challenge.” Pearson conveyed that his “appreciation of support from family, friends, colleagues, supporters, and medical professionals has been profound.” He also shared: “I had the wonderful opportunity of travelling to the US with my dad to meet family for the first time in Wisconsin.” Regarding his recent progress, Pearson stated: “Recently, I’ve been able to cycle in the Peak District, and swing golf clubs at the driving range, although my follow through needs some work (I’ve not fallen over yet!).” Despite acknowledging that his “prognosis is still uncertain,” he emphasized: “believe me that positivity and laughter can prove the best medicine as I experienced with old friends from school on a canal narrow boat on my birthday. There is always light somewhere ahead – new possibilities, new challenges.” Pearson’s initial managerial role was at Carlisle United, where he oversaw the club’s famous survival in the Football League on the final day of the 1998-99 season, secured by an injury-time goal from goalkeeper Jimmy Glass. He later managed Leicester, leading them into the Premier League in 2014 during his second spell. Despite the Foxes being at the bottom of the top flight at Christmas in the subsequent campaign, he successfully guided them to safety with a sequence of seven victories and one draw in their concluding nine matches.
