Nigel Bates has reappeared in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, marking his first appearance in 26 years, during a special episode aired on Christmas Eve. The character, portrayed by actor Paul Bradley, was seen at a community centre within the episode, where Yolande Trueman, played by Angela Wynter, was engaged in volunteer work. Nigel’s departure from the series occurred in April 1998, at which point he, along with his adopted daughter Clare, departed Albert Square to commence a new life in Scotland alongside his partner Julie Haye and her son Josh. “I’m thrilled and honoured to be back as Nigel,” Bradley said. “Despite it being such a long time ago, I still get recognised as Nigel in the street.” Chris Clenshaw, the executive producer for EastEnders, expressed that it was “fantastic” to welcome Bradley back to the show. He also teased: “There’s a lot of mystery about Nigel’s situation and why he’s here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks.” The BBC announced that on Christmas Day, Nigel is scheduled to be reunited with his childhood best friend, Phil Mitchell, portrayed by Steve McFadden. Bradley commented that he was thoroughly enjoying collaborating with McFadden once more. “I’m a huge admirer of his work, and he sets the bar really high,” he added. Key storylines during his initial tenure on the program included his romantic involvement with Debbie Tyler, his video shop employee played by Nicola Duffett, who later died in a hit-and-run incident. He also formed a close friendship with June Brown’s Dot Cotton, who regarded him as the additional son she never had. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
