Nigel Bates has reappeared in the BBC soap EastEnders, marking his first appearance in 26 years, during a special episode broadcast on Christmas Eve. The character, portrayed by Paul Bradley, was seen at a community centre where Angela Wynter’s character, Yolande Trueman, was engaged in volunteering activities. Nigel departed from the series in April 1998, relocating from Albert Square to Scotland with his adopted daughter Clare, his partner Julie Haye, and her son Josh, to begin a new life. Paul Bradley expressed his sentiments, stating, “I’m thrilled and honoured to be back as Nigel.” He further noted, “Despite it being such a long time ago, I still get recognised as Nigel in the street.” Chris Clenshaw, EastEnders’ executive producer, commented that it was “fantastic” to have Bradley return. He also hinted, “There’s a lot of mystery about Nigel’s situation and why he’s here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks.” The BBC announced that Nigel is scheduled to be reunited with his childhood best friend, Phil Mitchell, portrayed by Steve McFadden, on Christmas Day. Bradley shared that he was thoroughly enjoying collaborating with McFadden once more, adding, “I’m a huge admirer of his work, and he sets the bar really high.” Key storylines from his initial tenure on the program included his romance with Debbie Tyler, his video shop employee played by Nicola Duffett, who later died in a hit-and-run incident. He also formed a close bond with June Brown’s Dot Cotton, who regarded him as the additional son she had always desired. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
