A half-century from Nicola Carey propelled the Hobart Hurricanes to a 31-run victory against the Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League. The Australian left-handed batter contributed 52 runs off 38 deliveries, helping the Hurricanes achieve a total of 141-7 after they were sent in to bat first. England’s opening batter, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, scored 18 runs from an equal number of balls before being dismissed by her fellow countrywoman, Georgia Adams. For the Thunder, left-arm spinner Samantha Bates secured figures of 3-20. Despite a challenging beginning to their pursuit, the visiting Sydney Thunder side recovered somewhat due to Phoebe Litchfield’s contribution of 51 runs from 37 balls. However, their innings faltered once more following her dismissal, leading to them being bowled out for a total of 110. Among the Hurricanes’ bowlers, all-rounder Heather Graham stood out, claiming 3-19. The Thunder’s chase began with Chamari Athapaththu being dismissed lbw by Molly Strano on the very first ball. Their struggles continued as they reached 38-4 when Adams was bowled by Chloe Tryon during the seventh over. Litchfield maintained their hopes by establishing a 52-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Anika Learoyd. Nevertheless, both batters were dismissed in rapid succession, allowing Hobart to swiftly dismantle the remaining lower order and secure the top position in the WBBL standings following the initial round of matches. Heather Graham commented on the match, stating, “It was an interesting game, we got off to a good start with the bat but then fell away a bit in the middle.” She added, “But we were able to come out and take a wicket first ball, which is always an amazing feeling, then we were able to peg everyone else back apart from Litch.” Graham concluded by emphasizing, “It was a key wicket to get. It was a really good team effort tonight, everyone chipped in.”
