Legendary American football coach Bill Belichick has re-entered the sport following a one-year hiatus, though not in an NFL coaching capacity. The 72-year-old, recognized for securing a record six Super Bowl victories with the New England Patriots, has assumed the role of head coach for the University of North Carolina. Following the conclusion of his 24-year tenure with the Patriots at the close of the previous season, Belichick underwent an interview with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons but was not extended an offer for a position. He subsequently undertook several broadcasting assignments this season prior to agreeing to a three-year contract with the Tar Heels, reportedly valued at $30 million (£23.5 million). Steve Belichick, Bill Belichick’s father, served as an assistant coach at UNC from 1953 to 1955. Bill Belichick is now leading a Tar Heels program that has not secured a conference title since 1980. In a statement issued by UNC, Belichick stated: “I am excited for the opportunity. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times. “I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football programme in Chapel Hill.” This marks Belichick’s inaugural coaching position within the college football sphere, having dedicated his entire professional career to the NFL, commencing in 1975 as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts, a franchise that later moved to Indianapolis. He achieved two Super Bowl victories as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants prior to his tenure as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995. Notably, Belichick also held two brief tenures as head coach for the New York Jets, amounting to a mere seven days in total, with the second instance in 2000 concluding when his introductory news conference transformed into a resignation declaration. He departed to assume leadership of the Patriots, where he orchestrated the most significant dynasty in NFL history, as the New England squad, under quarterback Tom Brady, secured six Super Bowl titles over an 18-year period. Belichick holds the record for the most Super Bowl victories by a head coach, while the Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are tied for the team record.
