Jess and Laurie Gardener, a couple working as travel agents in Newquay, Cornwall, have initiated a Secret Santa campaign with the aim of bringing Christmas cheer to individuals facing financial difficulties. This initiative allows people to arrange for gifts or food to be sent to their loved ones when they are unable to afford such items themselves. The couple reported that approximately 40 families within the town have already received unexpected presents as a result of the campaign. According to Mr. Gardener, the campaign “snowballed” once information about it began to circulate. Request forms for gifts have been disseminated to local businesses and schools, and the form is also accessible via an online platform. The Gardeners stated that they initially funded the purchase of the first set of presents themselves, but are now accepting contributions to acquire additional items. Mr. Gardener explained that the concept originated as “a simple box in our shop.” He further commented, “The word started to spread and people were happy to put it in shops, cafes and schools.” He added, “It’s just snowballed and gone crazy now. It’s really good.” The request form inquires about desired items, whether the present is intended for a child, and if the recipient of gifts or food has any allergies. Mrs. Gardener expressed that their primary aim was to disseminate Christmas cheer. She stated, “The reality is there are a lot of families that are struggling.” Mrs. Gardener concluded, “If we can just help just one more child have a present under the tree we will do everything in our power to help.” For updates, BBC Cornwall can be followed on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
