Authorities probing the deadly shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City have deployed personnel to Georgia in their pursuit of the assailant who remains at large. Brian Thompson, an executive with UnitedHealthcare, sustained multiple gunshot wounds last week in Midtown from an attacker who subsequently escaped and seemingly departed the city via bus. According to law enforcement sources, who spoke with CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, officers have been sent to the southern state and to various locations along the identified bus route. As of Monday, the search operation has reached its fifth day; however, police have not disclosed the suspect’s identity or a potential motive. The individual, captured multiple times on CCTV wearing a mask, has been the subject of extensive police efforts primarily concentrated in New York’s Central Park, which appears to have been part of the assailant’s escape path. On Sunday, the lake underwent a second day of searching, and a discarded backpack discovered in the vicinity held a jacket and some Monopoly board game banknotes, but no firearm, as reported by sources to CBS. Investigators theorize that he entered the park via bicycle shortly after the shooting, subsequently taking a taxi upon exiting the park on the Upper West Side. Weekend-released images depict the masked suspect in the rear of the taxi, traveling uptown towards the Port Authority bus terminal, situated near Washington Heights. Since he has not been observed on any surveillance cameras departing the station, the assumption is that he fled by bus. This method of travel mirrors his arrival in the city 10 days prior to the shooting, when he took a Greyhound bus that had departed from Atlanta. Following his arrival, he checked into a hostel, briefly showing his face to the receptionist, which provided police with their most distinct image of him to date. Authorities have refrained from commenting on their hypotheses regarding the motive for the killing of Brian Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two. A prevailing theory suggests the incident may have been an assault targeting the healthcare insurance system. Bullet casings recovered at the crime scene bore the inscribed words “depose,” “deny” and “delay.” This inscription is reminiscent of the title of a publication that critiques methods used by insurers to evade claim payments. Thompson’s demise has led to a significant response on social media, with individuals recounting their experiences of being refused healthcare coverage by insurance companies. Copyright 2024 BBC.
