Plans put forth by Liverpool City Council suggest the establishment of a completely new settlement, comparable in size to a town, featuring 10,000 new residences, situated to the north of Liverpool. The council has presented this concept to the government, aiming to redevelop brownfield land located north of the city, extending towards Bootle and into Sefton, on the city’s periphery. This forthcoming development would bear the name Liverpool North. It is projected to extend three miles (5km), covering areas such as Everton, Anfield, and Kirkdale, reaching into Bootle. The proposed scheme is set to include significant sites along its path, such as Everton’s new £500m stadium at Bramley Moore Dock and the £20m Bootle New Strand development project. New Town status refers to a classification granted to specific regions within the UK that are undergoing substantial redevelopment efforts focused on their revitalization. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the city council has collaborated with Sefton Council, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Homes England, and principal landowners in the vicinity to establish a 10-year strategic vision for the locality. Liam Robinson, the council leader, stated that the initiative embodies “the scale of ambition we want to see within the city”. Marion Atkinson, who leads Sefton Council, commented: “We welcome the government’s commitment to regeneration and this would super-charge our plans to transform Bootle and south Sefton for the benefit of residents and businesses.” Steve Rotheram, mayor of the Liverpool City Region, characterized the proposals as “bold.” He further remarked that they are “transforming areas that have been left behind for far too long and showing the power of regeneration to improve lives”.
