A new initiative has been introduced to assist individuals affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). Organisers stated that the MS Society’s Community Connections programme is designed to “provide a comprehensive package of support” for those living with MS and their relatives. The charity reported that approximately 17,000 individuals in Wales and south-west England are affected by this condition, which impacts the brain and spinal cord. Leila Middlehurst Evans, the manager for Community Connections, commented that the service is expected to “make a huge difference in enabling people to live well with MS”. The charity indicated that, in collaboration with organizations like Citizens’ Advice, the support offered will encompass financial guidance, advice on energy efficiency, and aid for vulnerable households. Funding for the service comes from Wales & West Utilities, which has contributed over £213,000 through its Vulnerability and Carbon Monoxide Allowance (VCMA). Sophie Shorney, the VCMA manager at Wales & West, stated: “Community Connections will go to the heart of communities across Wales and the south-west of England to provide this vital help and support.” She added: “The VCMA fund allows us to work in partnership with organisations like the MS Society to reach more people and provide them with the help they need to ensure they receive the right support and help with their bills, to help keep them safe and warm in their own environment.” The initiative is scheduled to continue until 2026.
