A coastguard rescue team, which had occupied the same facility for 40 years, has relocated to a new base. The Needles Coastguard Team is now conducting its operations from its new station at Golden Hill Fort, located in the Freshwater area of the Isle of Wight. Andrew Woodford, a senior coastal operations officer, described the new facility as “future-proof,” stating that it places them “in a much better place to respond to call-outs and undertake training activities.” The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced that an official opening ceremony for the new station is scheduled to occur later this year. The MCA indicated that the new base is spacious, modern, and comprehensively equipped for crews to prepare for missions. It features a dedicated training room and includes washing and drying facilities for the team of 11 volunteers. “This is great news for both the team and the island, as we are now in a much better place to respond to call-outs and undertake training activities,” Mr Woodford reiterated. He added, “A fit-for-purpose station is such an important part of coastguard training and response, so this is a brilliant addition to the service which will have clear benefits.” The project involved 12 months of planning and three months of construction, with costs exceeding £200,000.
