A new hospital located in Smethwick has welcomed its first baby. Mona Lisa Yonas was born at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital on Wednesday at 08:48 GMT. Her parents, Semhar Tesfu and Yonas Kflu, who reside in Perry Barr, expressed that it was an emotional occasion and conveyed their immense happiness that their daughter’s birth took place at the newly opened hospital. This facility commenced operations following the closure of the maternity department at City Hospital Birmingham and the subsequent relocation of maternity services. “We really appreciate the great job the midwives have done and want to say thank you to everyone who helped to deliver our baby safely,” the couple said. Midwife Emily, responsible for Mona Lisa’s delivery, described the day as exciting and one she would cherish throughout her professional life. Management at the hospital advised that individuals experiencing labour and those in need of emergency medical attention should now proceed to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. Additionally, certain outpatient appointments, such as scans and consultations with specialists, will be conducted at the new hospital. Concurrently, the antenatal clinic situated on Hallam Street, at the former Sandwell Hospital location, will continue to operate, as will community facilities like the Aston Pride Community Healthcare Centre, according to their statement. The neonatal department has also been relocated to the new hospital, involving the transfer of 12 infants, the youngest of whom was merely two days old.
