Students attending a special school in Staffordshire have characterized their recently adapted playground as “amazing.” For some, this marks their first experience using a swing. Parents received recognition for contributing a quarter of the necessary funds for the facility, located in Rudyard, close to Leek. Mitch Hulme undertook a double run from John O’ Groats to Lands End to generate funds for his daughter’s school, following his recovery from injuries sustained in a lorry accident. “They’re amazing here at Horton Lodge,” he stated. “[My daughter’s] development from when she started was phenomenal. That’s why I just wanted to show my thanks.” Mr. Hulme reported that six months prior to his fundraising run, he was struck by a lorry, resulting in six spinal fractures; however, he recuperated sufficiently to participate in the challenge. On November 29, he discharged a confetti cannon during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new playground at Horton Lodge Special School. The 64 students experienced for the first time the swings, slide, climbing frame, and roundabout, all of which were specifically engineered for children with disabilities. Pupil Charlie commented, “This playground is very spacious,” adding, “I think it’s going to be a lot better than it was before.” His friend, Harrison, mentioned that the closest specialized swing was located many miles from the school. Classmate Oliver expressed that he “really liked” his initial experience on the new swing. Head teacher Lucy Bloor clarified that the process of fundraising and subsequently establishing the playground spanned several years. The project incurred costs exceeding £100,000, with Staffordshire County Council providing 75% of the funding, and the remaining amount being collected by parents and the broader community. “The children were so excited and enjoyed every minute of the celebration,” Ms. Bloor further stated.
