Law enforcement officials have made public two additional photographs of an individual sought in connection with the fatal shooting of a health insurance chief executive in New York. Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old head of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in the back on Wednesday while en route to a conference, an incident authorities suspect was a targeted act. Mayor Eric Adams stated on Saturday that the “net is tightening” around the assailant, who has eluded capture by law enforcement thus far, notwithstanding a comprehensive search and the deployment of facial recognition technology. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced a reward of $50,000 (£39,000) for details that result in the apprehension of the suspect. The most recent photographs of the individual under investigation were both captured from within a vehicle. One image depicts him in the rear of a taxi, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and a disposable face covering. The second shows him outside of the vehicle, also wearing a facemask. This updated public request for information coincided with reports from US media outlets indicating that a backpack, believed to be the suspect’s and found near the crime scene, held a Tommy Hilfiger jacket and play money from the board game Monopoly. Thompson, a 50-year-old individual and father of two, was shot while traveling to an investor conference in Midtown Manhattan, an event where he was slated to deliver a speech later on the same day. According to police accounts, the assailant initially departed the location on foot, subsequently proceeding by bicycle in the direction of Central Park. The reason behind the homicide remains under investigation. Officials have verified that the terms “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” were inscribed on bullet casings discovered near the victim’s remains – terminology potentially linked to those critical of the private health insurance sector in the United States. On Friday, an individual with knowledge of the situation informed CBS News, a US partner of the BBC, that investigators suspect the individual is no longer within New York City and might have traveled by bus to Atlanta, Georgia.
