The Royal Navy has announced the appointment of a new commanding officer (CO) for a naval air base located in Cornwall. Captain James Hall assumed leadership of RNAS Culdrose, situated near Helston, on Monday, succeeding the former commander, Captain Stuart Irwin, according to the Royal Navy. Captain Hall, whose career commenced in 2001, previously held two positions at Culdrose: deputy force commander for the base’s fixed-wing contingent and subsequently commander of the Merlin helicopter force. He described assuming the role as a “huge privilege,” stating: “The women and men of the Fleet Air Arm are the heartbeat of everything that we do, and the team here at RNAS Culdrose is pivotal to delivering outputs for our nation.” Captain Hall remarked that his return to Culdrose comes at an “exciting time,” given the planned £100 million redevelopment project. This project encompasses new hangars for Merlin Mk2 aircraft, an updated training environment, and facilities for testing autonomous boats and submarines. Captain Hall’s training was as a Sea King helicopter aviator, and he completed multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Prior to his current assignment at Culdrose, his most recent position was with the Ministry of Defenece (MoD), where he contributed to the advancement of maritime drone technology. Established in 1947 as a Royal Navy air station, RNAS Culdrose initially offered air support and surveillance to the navy. It has since developed into one of the service’s most significant helicopter bases. The Royal Navy reported that the base provides employment for over 3,000 individuals.
