Following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the final of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Netflix has successfully acquired the rights to broadcast live coverage of the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cups within the United States. Fifa, football’s global governing body, announced the agreement on Friday. This acquisition represents Netflix’s inaugural venture into securing full live broadcasting rights for a complete sports competition. According to Fifa president Gianni Infantino, “As a marquee brand and Fifa’s new long-term partner, Netflix has shown a very strong level of commitment to growing women’s football.” Brazil is set to host the 2027 World Cup. The location for the 2031 tournament remains unconfirmed, though potential bids have been put forward by England, a collaborative effort from other British federations, and the US. Netflix has previously ventured into live sports broadcasting, notably with the recent boxing match featuring Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. The streaming platform reported that 60 million households viewed the event live, despite some reported technical difficulties with the transmission. Additionally, Netflix is scheduled to broadcast two NFL games next week on 25 December, as part of a recently established three-year agreement for Christmas Day fixtures. Within the United Kingdom, the Women’s World Cup is categorized as a ‘crown jewel’ sporting event, meaning it must be made available to free-to-air broadcasters. The 2023 World Cup was broadcast by BBC and ITV, attracting a peak audience of 12 million viewers for Spain’s win against England in the final match. Prior to the tournament, Infantino had issued a warning of a potential TV blackout in five nations, including the UK, citing what he described as “disappointing” proposals from broadcasting companies. The BBC has also announced its broadcast schedule for the 2025 Women’s Euros. Sandi Toksvig will be accompanied by Gyles Brandreth, Lulu, Emmanuel Sonubi, and Alan Davies. Opportunities are available to perform songs by Queen, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, and other artists. Ben Fogle and Kate Humble are returning for the celebratory events at Longleat Safari Park. Discussions will cover subjects ranging from microplastics found in our air, soil, and waterways, to the volume of food waste generated during this period of the year.
