A heritage railway has commenced its Santa Specials, which this year include a group of actors and performers joining the volunteers for the festive event. The Nene Valley Railway (NVR), which operates for approximately eight miles (about 12km) near Peterborough, has previously hosted Christmas events, but this year’s iteration is considered one of its most ambitious. Chris O’Regan of the railway indicated that the experience is designed to be more immersive for children, who participate in activities during their train rides. He commented, “The smell of mince pies mixed with the aroma of smoke from a steam train is quite intoxicating.” O’Regan also acknowledged the vital contribution of the railway’s volunteers, stating, “NVR could not run without our brilliant volunteers. We have over 350 [of them] and they are the lifeblood of the railway.” He further explained the decision to augment the team: “But this year we thought we would take some pressure off them, so we have hired a wonderful cast of actors and performers who are dressed splendidly as elves, princesses – and not forgetting Santa and Mrs Claus.” Mr. O’Regan outlined that patrons would engage in various festive activities before boarding the steam train. He detailed, “There will be an ice tunnel, the chance to make a Christmas toy and decorate a lush Christmas tree, as well as snowball fights and a charming grotto where they’ll receive a gift from Santa Claus.” However, he also noted the significant cost involved in staging such a production. He explained, “For just one 15-mile round trip on a steam train, it costs £400 in coal alone, without anything else.” Nine-year-old Zayden, from Peterborough, expressed his enjoyment of the journey and observing the steam passing the windows. He shared, “Santa gave us presents. I got a colouring set and will do that when I get home.” Zayden also added, “I also loved how the elves came around the train, singing and dancing.” His six-year-old sister, Violet, who was experiencing a steam train for the first time, characterized the event as “magical.” For updates on Peterborough news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
