Former player Nedum Onuoha expressed his view that the recent loss of discipline among Wolves players is not primarily the fault of manager Gary O’Neil. He suggested that these issues stem from a profound sense of frustration within the squad regarding their current standing. Onuoha believes the players feel they should be performing better, and that several recent defeats have occurred in games from which they had expected to secure three points. He described the failure to gain points and the nature of their performances, such as a last-minute home loss to Ipswich, as unacceptable. While not condoning the behavior, Onuoha noted he has witnessed similar levels of anger previously, indicating the players are struggling to control their emotions. He predicted they would later apologize with significant regret, as these actions do not typically reflect their character, but affirmed that the situation points to a team in crisis. Onuoha observed that other teams experiencing a comparable number of defeats are not exhibiting similar disciplinary problems. He argued that this development places a different kind of pressure on the manager and coaching staff. Previously, performances might have been deemed acceptable, and a sense of hope persisted, but the actions of the players under their command fundamentally alter this narrative. Onuoha speculated that the players are likely enduring the most challenging period of their careers, which explains their current conduct. He also highlighted that the current manager is losing players to suspension, which could significantly impact the team. Onuoha concluded that these reactions demonstrate the team’s emotional state, suggesting they have not given up, but are indeed “at rock bottom.” Nedum Onuoha conveyed these observations during an interview with BBC Sport’s Nat Hayward.
