Proposed modifications for cemeteries in Rotherham have been presented, encompassing provisions for natural burials and efforts to safeguard historical graves. Dignity, the firm operating Rotherham Council’s cemeteries and crematorium under contract, has detailed initiatives it intends to implement over the coming three years. Dignity’s annual report indicated that a natural burial ground is slated for creation within East Herringthorpe Cemetery, a departure from the earlier proposal for Greasbrough Lane. The company also stated its intention to renovate the existing office building at East Herringthorpe, incorporating facilities such as restrooms, vending machines, and an area for community events. The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) reported that Dignity initially intended to demolish this office block but opted for refurbishment following a consultation process. A separate initiative by Dignity focuses on the restoration of memorials that have deteriorated, specifically those holding local importance and lacking living relatives. The report specified that local historians and “Friends Of” groups are expected to contribute to these preservation activities, with work commencing upon the appointment of a new memorial technician. Dignity announced that enhancements have been completed in the Muslim section of East Herringthorpe Cemetery, involving the installation of handrails and additional water taps. The company intends to undertake further landscaping work in the upcoming year. Furthermore, the company disclosed its collaboration with local artists and families on a project named “Letters for Heaven,” designated for inclusion in the baby section. Additional concepts under consideration encompass placing beehives at East Herringthorpe Cemetery and incorporating remembrance plaques for infants interred in unmarked graves. The report also mentioned that proposals to install plaques commemorating miners who perished in the Maltby Mining Disaster are currently in their preliminary phases.
