The national government has confirmed that a sum of £10 million in funding remains accessible for the renovation of a local theatre. The Octagon Theatre, located in Yeovil, ceased operations in April 2023. Somerset Council intends to undertake improvements to the structure and have it operational again by the 2026 pantomime season. Confirmation of this financial support for the theatre was provided by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. This announcement came after the Labour party presented its initial budget subsequent to its victory in the general election. Federica Smith-Roberts, a representative from the council, stated: “This is a positive step forward, considering there were concerns about what the budget would bring.” Ms Smith-Roberts further commented: “This allows us to bring forward our revised business case.” She continued: “This will be a smaller project but we still look to enhance the theatre facilities and tackle the accessibility issues.” Upon its reopening, the management of the facility will be transferred to Yeovil Town Council. An updated preliminary business proposal concerning The Octagon is currently being prepared and is scheduled for submission to the government for review during the spring of 2025.
