Nathan McSweeney delivered an unbeaten score of 78 runs, leading the Brisbane Heat to a last-ball victory over the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, following his recent exclusion from the Australia Test squad. During his 49-ball innings, McSweeney struck 10 fours and two sixes as the reigning champions, the Heat, successfully pursued a target of 175 runs. The right-handed batsman had debuted internationally in the series against India, achieving an average of 14.40 across the initial three Tests before being substituted by 19-year-old Sam Konstas for the concluding two fixtures. His performance was bolstered by Matt Renshaw, who contributed 54 runs from 27 deliveries, and Paul Walter of Essex, who scored 19. The Strikers had set a total of 174 for 6 wickets, with England’s Jamie Overton scoring an unbeaten 45 runs from 24 balls and Ollie Pope adding 34 runs from 29 balls. Speaking on Sky Sports, McSweeney stated: “It is nice to get the boys home. It was probably a bit over par so it is a really good win for us.” He further commented on his personal situation, saying: “It is always nice to bounce back. I loved my time in the Australia cricket team, sharing the changing room with some of Australia’s greatest players was awesome and hopefully I can learn from the experience and get back there soon.” He also quoted Marnus Labuschagne, adding: “Marnus [Labuschagne] told me ‘it is not where it starts, it is where it ends’ and every good story has its ups and downs so hopefully I can look back on this as a great learning curve.”
