Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui secured the top spots in the men’s and women’s races, respectively, at the New York City Marathon. Nageeye had previously finished third in the New York Marathon in 2022. In the men’s wheelchair competition, American favorite Daniel Romanchuk emerged victorious, with Britain’s David Weir taking second place. Romanchuk, who had also triumphed in 2018 and 2019, completed the course in 1 hour, 36 minutes, 31 seconds, finishing five seconds ahead of Weir. Japan’s Tomoko Suzuki placed third, eight seconds behind Weir. Switzerland’s Marcel Hug, the winner of 16 consecutive marathons and aiming for a fourth successive victory in New York, finished fourth. Susannah Scaroni won the women’s wheelchair race for the second time, finishing more than 10 minutes ahead of fellow American and five-time champion Tatyana McFadden. Switzerland’s Manuela Schar secured third position. Nageeye demonstrated a strong finish, overtaking Kenya’s Evans Chebet, the 2022 champion, in the final stretch to record a time of 2:07.39. Kenya’s Albert Korir secured third place. “I was so focused. When I reached the finish, the emotion was not there. It felt like I was dreaming,” stated Nageeye, a silver medallist at the 2020 Olympics. Chepkirui achieved victory with a time of 2:24.35, marking her inaugural win in a world marathon major event. She finished 14 seconds ahead of Hellen Obiri, the 2023 winner, with Vivian Cheruiyot completing an entirely Kenyan podium. Chepkirui commented, “This means a lot to me. I had to really dig in and it was really hard. I pushed myself to the limit and I am so happy.”
