The name Muhammad emerged as the leading preference for parents selecting names for their infant boys in England and Wales during 2023, with over 4,600 registrations. This marks its ascent to the top position, surpassing Noah, which was previously the most popular, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Muhammad has consistently ranked within the top 10 names for baby boys since 2016. Despite its overall popularity, regional differences exist, as Muhammad did not feature in the top 10 in three English regions. The ONS, which treats each spelling as distinct, noted that alternative spellings such as Mohammed and Mohammad also secured positions within the top 100 list for England and Wales, with various forms of the name having shown popularity in prior years. For baby girls, Olivia maintained its status as the most favored name, with Amelia and Isla following. These three leading names have retained their positions since 2022. Last year, hyphenated names experienced a significant increase in popularity among girls, with more than 19,140 such names recorded, an increase from approximately 12,330 in the preceding year. New additions to the top 100 list for girls included Lilah, Raya, and Hazel, while Jax, Enzo, and Bodhi were new entries to the top 100 for boys. On Thursday, the ONS stated that popular culture “continues to influence” naming decisions, providing examples such as singers Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, the Kardashian-Jenner family’s children Reign and Saint, and actors Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy. Names associated with other music artists, including Miley, Rihanna, Kendrick, and Elton, also showed an increase in 2023. The ONS attributed this probable rise to factors such as album releases, tours, or prominent performances by Miley Cyrus, Kendrick Lamar, Elton John, and Rihanna. Additionally, days of the week served as a source of inspiration for parents, with names like Sunday and Wednesday experiencing a surge in popularity last year. The ONS suggested a potential connection to the Netflix series Wednesday, which premiered in late 2022. Regarding seasonal names, Autumn holds the 96th position on the list, while Summer is ranked 86th. Summer’s ranking represents an increase of 10 places from 2022 but is 38 places lower than its position in 2013. Conversely, royal names experienced reduced popularity in 2023, continuing an established trend. Names such as George, Archie, Harry, Charlotte, Elizabeth, and Charles have all seen a decrease in popularity in recent years. The data for the most popular baby names of 2022 was published last May, following adjustments to resources. Confirmation of the publishing dates for 2024’s most popular selections is still pending.
