YouTuber MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has asserted that he possesses video evidence indicating that accusations of his forthcoming reality game show “shamelessly exploit[ing]” participants are “blown out of proportion.” Donaldson, known online as MrBeast, unveiled a teaser for his series, Beast Games, on Monday, simultaneously announcing its release for the following month. A US lawsuit filed in September implicated Amazon and MrBeast, detailing various allegations concerning the treatment of participants during production. The Amazon series was promoted as the world’s largest live game show, featuring 1,000 competitors in a sequence of elimination challenges vying for a $5m (£3.9m) cash award. Although he has not issued a formal statement regarding the accusations, MrBeast responded to a user on X on Monday who inquired about them. “We have tons of behind the scenes dropping when the show does to show how blown out of proportion these claims were,” he stated. “Just can’t release it now because it would spoil the games.” Claims were initiated by five anonymous contestants, representing all individuals who participated in the series. Their allegations include non-payment, exposure to hazardous conditions, and experiences of sexual harassment. The 54-page legal filing accuses the production of fostering a “culture of misogyny,” exerting control over an “underfed and overtired” cast, and neglecting to ensure a secure working environment. The participants are pursuing legal action against the entities involved in the program, such as Amazon and MrB2024, which legal representatives assert is “believed to be owned in whole or part, directly or indirectly” by MrBeast. BBC Newsbeat has reached out to MrBeast and Amazon regarding the continuing legal proceedings. Additionally, a production company, Off One’s Base LLP, is cited in the documents, which BBC Newsbeat has been unable to reach for comment. Representatives representing the contestants have also been solicited for comment. MrBeast holds the title of the world’s largest YouTuber, boasting over 300 million subscribers, and is recognized for both intricate challenges and philanthropic endeavors. Upon releasing a teaser trailer for the series on Monday, the 26-year-old stated that he had “poured everything I have into this show.” He further commented on X that his YouTube channel had “def[initely] suffered a bit” because of the extensive time dedicated to Beast Games. Beyond his role as host of the challenges, MrBeast also serves as an executive producer for the series, which Amazon describes as mirroring his YouTube content, “fueled by time-sensitive emotional decisions, pyrotechnics, and of course, big-rewards.” The trailer depicts the 1,000 contestants arranged in individual compartments, leaping from a helicopter, and aboard a pirate ship. MrBeast expressed in an Instagram story, “This show is going to blow your mind, I am so excited.” This legal action represents an additional hurdle for MrBeast in a year that has also featured allegations against Ava Kris Tyson, one of his former channel co-hosts. Tyson ceased her association with MrBeast in July following accusations from other YouTubers that she had sent inappropriate messages to a minor, reportedly aged 13 at the time, when Tyson was 20. At that juncture, Tyson issued an apology for her “past actions,” but asserted that her conduct never “extended beyond bad edgy jokes” and refuted any claims of grooming. Earlier in the current month, legal counsel retained by MrBeast determined that the grooming allegations were “without basis.” Nevertheless, the investigation did uncover some “isolated instances of workplace harassment and misconduct,” but noted that MrBeast’s company implemented “swift and appropriate actions” upon notification.
