Member of Parliament Mike Amesbury has been charged with assault following the emergence of a video that reportedly shows him striking a man to the ground in a street. The charge against the 55-year-old, who has been suspended from the Labour party, pertains to alleged reports of an assault on a 45-year-old man in Frodsham, Cheshire, which occurred shortly after 02:45 BST on October 26. The MP is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to face a formal charge of common assault. Mr. Amesbury confirmed that he had been instructed to attend court subsequent to the “deeply regrettable” incident. The Runcorn and Helsby MP stated that he is continuing to cooperate with the police and could not provide further comment “given this is an ongoing case.” The specific date and location for his initial court appearance have not yet been confirmed. Mr. Amesbury voluntarily participated in an interview under police caution after reports of an assault on Main Street in the town. Cheshire Police investigated the complaint and submitted a file for prosecutors to review on October 29. Rosemary Ainslie of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated that it was “extremely important that there should be no reporting commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.” She added, “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.” Mr. Amesbury secured his seat in his Cheshire constituency during the July general election with a majority of 14,696 votes. He served as a Labour MP from 2017 until his suspension and held the position of a shadow minister between 2018 and 2024.
