Amanda Martin, the Member of Parliament for Portsmouth North, has initiated a petition aimed at preventing the closure of Cosham Post Office. This branch is among as many as 115 locations facing potential closure due to a restructuring of the Post Office business. Ms. Martin described the Post Office as “vital.” She characterized the High Street branch as “beloved and bustling,” noting its significance as one of the limited accessible venues where local residents can conduct banking transactions. Ms. Martin stated her intention to leverage the petition, which her office reported had gathered over 700 signatures within three days, to persuade Post Office Ltd to reconsider the proposed closure. The Labour MP emphasized that the Post Office is “vital for local residents, and its potential closure would significantly impact our community.” A resident who supported the petition highlighted that all three banks where they held accounts on Cosham High Street had already ceased operations. Consequently, this individual relies on cash for shopping, which they withdraw from their bank account through the Post Office. The resident commented, “The closure of this branch would be disastrous for us elderly people.” Another retired pensioner, also a signatory to Ms. Martin’s petition, mentioned visiting the Post Office “nearly every day” to replenish their electric key. This pensioner stated, “Losing the Post Office would mean losing my daily routine of exercise and social interaction with others.” They added, “The only alternative would be to rely on my phone which doesn’t provide the same level of engagement.” Ms. Martin affirmed her commitment to “do everything possible to prevent the closure of this beloved local branch.” On Politics South, Olivia Bailey, the Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, commented on the potential closures across the south of England, stating: “The Post Office has got to change with the times like any other business and modernise too… but we’ve got to preserve that strong community connection and presence on the high street in my mind.” She further emphasized, “Human contact is so important and the ability to go to your high street and go to the bank, or nip into your post office needs to be preserved.” Joe Robertson, the Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East, described Post Offices as “absolutely essential.” He elaborated, “Particularly for communities that live in more geographically remote places, like the Isle of Wight and small villages, as they provide services that have been withdrawn elsewhere.”
