Jose Mourinho, the manager of Fenerbahce, expressed his disapproval of refereeing standards in Turkey, stating his belief that the Turkish League is poor and officials are apprehensive. His comments followed a dramatic match against Trabzonspor, which saw his Fenerbahce team secure a 3-2 victory with a goal in the 102nd minute. The manager, who previously led Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham, ran onto the field and attempted a knee slide after Sofyan Amrabat’s goal in stoppage time clinched a 3-2 win on Sunday. Nevertheless, Mourinho voiced dissatisfaction regarding two penalties awarded to the home side, Trabzonspor, both following video assistant referee (VAR) reviews. He also believed his team deserved a penalty kick prior to Amrabat’s decisive late goal. The 61-year-old coach even expressed doubts about his decision to come to Turkey. In an extensive interview with broadcaster beIN Sports, Mourinho criticized the officiating of referee Oguzhan Cakir and VAR official Atilla Karaoglan. “I blame the Fenerbahce people that brought me here,” Mourinho stated, having assumed his role at the club in June. “They told me only half of the truth.” He continued, “They didn’t tell me the whole truth because if they told me the whole truth, I wouldn’t come.” “But, with half of the truth and my boys, we fight opponents and the system.” Mourinho further remarked: “He [Karaoglan] was alert to give the two penalty decisions which the referee didn’t give and then he was having Turkish tea when it was a clear penalty for us and he didn’t give it.” Following their victory, Fenerbahce advanced to second place in the Turkish top flight, trailing leaders Galatasaray by five points. Mourinho also stated, “The man of the match was Atilla Karaoglan.” He elaborated, “We didn’t see him but he was the referee. The referee was just a little boy that was there on the pitch, but the referee was Atilla Karaoglan.” Mourinho continued, “He goes from the invisible man to the most important man in the match.” “I think I am speaking on behalf of every Fenerbahce fan – we don’t want him again.” He concluded his remarks on Karaoglan by saying, “We don’t want him as a VAR. We don’t want him on the pitch but, on the VAR, even less.” Trabzonspor’s head coach, Senol Gunes, dismissed Mourinho’s remarks. “I don’t need to talk about them,” Gunes stated. “What happened? Penalty or not? A goal scored? Isn’t it a goal? Many things can be talked about. I stay away from them anyway.” He added, “I think that where there is all that shouting, the decisions are against Trabzonspor, not in its favour.” Several contentious incidents involving officials occurred in Turkish football during the previous season, notably the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspending all leagues after referee Halil Umut Meler was assaulted by a club president on the field following a match. In a separate event, Istanbulspor’s president removed his team from the pitch to protest a refereeing decision during their game against Trabzonspor.
