The Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team has reported a year of increased activity, responding to its most recent incident over the past weekend. On Saturday evening, the team was dispatched to Dove Crag, situated near Ambleside, Cumbria. The call concerned a man who had sustained an ankle injury, rendering him unable to continue his descent. A group of 10 rescuers located the individual and transported him down to Sykeside, where he was reunited with his companions “for a well earned pint.” A spokesperson for the team confirmed that this particular rescue marked their 100th call-out for the year 2024. Earlier in the day, the man had been hiking with friends when he injured his leg. Despite the injury, he managed to proceed along the route, traversing both Helvellyn and Fairfield. However, as the group began their descent into Dovedale, it became apparent that he could not continue. Due to inadequate mobile phone reception in the area, two of his friends proceeded to Sykeside campsite to establish contact for assistance. The team spokesman stated, “After stabilising his ankle with a splint, and with some assistance the male was able to slowly walk down to the team Land Rovers.” The spokesman further added, “He was then driven to Sykeside to be reunited with his friends for a well earned pint and their overnight camp.” The spokesman reiterated that 2024 has been “busier than usual” for the team, emphasizing that their volunteers consistently remain available “for anyone who finds themselves in difficulties in the fells of the Ullswater valley.”
