An East Sussex primary school has received a “good” rating from Ofsted, marking a significant improvement from its “inadequate” assessment five years prior. Moulsecoomb Primary School, located in Brighton, became part of The Pioneer Academy Trust three years ago. This transition occurred despite strong objections from parents and a unified stance against it by Brighton & Hove City Council. The most recent Ofsted report noted that inspectors observed “high ambition” for all students, with a particular focus on those with special education needs and disabilities. Headteacher Adam Sutton stated that the Ofsted evaluation was a reflection of the school’s “nurturing and supportive ethos”. Ofsted assessed the school as “good” across all inspected categories. Inspectors commended the school for its “friendly and inclusive” environment, characterizing its pupils as “happy and proud”. Furthermore, Ofsted observed an improvement in pupils’ attainment since the school’s affiliation with The Pioneer Academy Trust. Mr. Sutton commented: “We are very proud of our school and delighted that this report reflects the immense progress that has been made.“The support we have received from The Pioneer Academy has truly enabled our whole school to thrive.” Lee Mason-Ellis, chief executive of The Pioneer Academy, also stated: “Thank you to all our staff for their dedication to providing the best possible education and care, and thank you to all Moulsecoomb’s pupils, parents and carers and wider community for their support.” The school’s previous full inspection by Ofsted in 2019 had resulted in an “inadequate” rating. In the same year, over 2,150 parents and carers endorsed a petition opposing the decision for the school to become an academy.
