A motorist whose vehicle sustained damage after encountering a pothole reports that he has been awaiting compensation from a local authority for half a year. John Tagg, a 54-year-old resident of Alvaston, Derby, struck a water-filled pothole on Littlewell Lane in Stanton by Dale, Derbyshire, on March 28. He stated that his Mercedes C220 AMG Sport Plus incurred almost £600 in damages, necessitating the replacement of both front tyres and a significant portion of the exhaust system. Derbyshire County Council issued an apology for the delay in processing Mr Tagg’s claim, with a spokesperson explaining that the council is managing a substantial backlog of compensation requests attributed to a “particularly wet winter and spring.” Although the pothole, measuring one metre wide and 20 centimetres deep, was repaired in May, Mr Tagg reported that he had yet to receive a reply regarding his claim, which was submitted in April. Over half a year after submitting the claim, Mr Tagg conveyed his “frustration and annoyance” to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. He stated, “I feel the council are just taking liberties over paying out.” He further added, “If they had carried out their duties and maintained the public highway I would not still be waiting to be reimbursed for my repairs.” He also commented, “Now I can’t even contact them [the council] directly as they seem to have put the highway claim department in a protective bubble. It’s a farce.” A county council spokesperson indicated that, in an effort to manage the backlog of claims, council personnel are not responding to phone calls requesting updates, as doing so could impede their progress. The spokesperson further explained, “We do realise that this is frustrating, but stopping taking phone calls does mean that ultimately we can get to all the applications more quickly.” They concluded by stating, “The process for submitting an application is online, so once someone has submitted an application they can be sure that we have it and will deal with it in time.” Post navigation Resident reports council ‘blocking’ home EV charging
