A procession of motorcyclists has concluded its yearly toy run, gathering approximately 2,900 presents intended for underprivileged children across north Staffordshire. Hundreds of participants, some dressed as Santa Claus, navigated the streets of Stoke-on-Trent, braving the wet and windy weather conditions brought by Storm Bert. The 46th iteration of the toy run was orchestrated by the charity Star Bikers, which reported an unprecedented volume of donations. These contributions were provided by residents situated along the route and at 102 designated collection points throughout the city. On Sunday morning, the planned route was modified to avoid Baddeley Green, where, according to the charity, some road surfaces were “under about a foot of water.” Despite these challenging circumstances, Lisa Abbotts, one of the event’s organizers, stated: “There was no doubt that the run would go on in some form.” She further explained, “We got off lightly to only have to cut off one corner.” The rainfall did lead to a decrease in the number of riders compared to previous years; however, donations remained substantial. Mrs. Abbotts expressed that the charity was “overwhelmed” by the support, emphasizing the “massive difference” the gifts would make to families. She added: “I can’t explain the feeling you get when you see these people go past, they’re giving up their Sunday morning and helping – it’s wonderful.” The collected presents are scheduled for distribution to young individuals over the coming month, with the aim of ensuring every child receives a gift on Christmas Day.
