Fifteen-year-old Holly Newton was fatally stabbed by her former boyfriend, Logan MacPhail, in Hexham, Northumberland, in January 2023. The following is the victim impact statement delivered by her mother, Micala Trussler, to Newcastle Crown Court during the sentencing proceedings for her daughter’s killer. Micala Trussler recounted that on Friday, 27 January 2023, her family’s lives were irrevocably altered. She stated she had kissed her four children goodbye as they left for school, and one did not return. She questioned how any parent could begin to grasp receiving a call from an unknown individual informing them that their daughter had been stabbed, noting those words continue to echo in her mind. She described racing to the location with two of her children, who were crying and scared by the unfolding events, stating she could not have foreseen what they would witness. While the worst scenarios crossed their minds, she never anticipated the horrific reality of the scene. The profound trauma evident on her children’s faces as they observed their sister being placed into an ambulance is an image that will remain with them indefinitely, and the full magnitude of the situation is inexpressible. She expressed that she would never be able to forget being prevented from seeing her daughter in the alleyway or ambulance, from seeing her eyes open, or hearing her final words, or from Holly knowing her mother was present. Micala Trussler added that she could not even embrace or touch her daughter in the hospital, stating, “my daughter was a crime scene, she was evidence.” Logan MacPhail was a frequent guest in their home on most weekends, leading the family to know him well. He was Holly’s first and only boyfriend, and it was understandable that he would be attracted to a girl like Holly, who was described as a caring and thoughtful young lady. Holly was aware that he struggled with reading and would visit the local library to borrow children’s books to assist him in learning. Logan was characterized as mild-mannered and polite; their relationship as a couple was typical for teenagers and outwardly displayed no warning signs until its conclusion. They experienced both positive and challenging times together, and Micala Trussler possesses videos and photographs on her phone showing them dancing happily in her living room. She stated that no one could have ever predicted Logan was capable of such an act. As they matured, it became evident that Holly was more developed than Logan, and they were drifting apart. Micala Trussler was unaware of the emotional distress Holly was enduring while attempting to end the relationship. She firmly believes this constitutes a classic instance of domestic abuse, though legal restrictions prevent her from using that term due to Holly’s age. Micala Trussler stated her conviction that Logan believed if he could not have Holly, no one else could, indicating an obsession with her. Holly had informed her mother that Logan had accessed her social media accounts and somehow knew her passwords. Despite Holly telling him to stop, he convinced her he possessed software that allowed him to hack into accounts. He employed threats of self-harm as emotional blackmail; Holly had wished to end the relationship earlier but was afraid due to the potential consequences. Logan stalked her daughter, creeping around their house at night and sending photographs to her son. She noted they would never know if he had the knife on him at that point, but listening to him attempt to manipulate her son into opening the door or window was terrifying. On 27 January, Logan MacPhail left his house and later school with a knife, traveling a significant distance on public transport among families and other children with the weapon in his pocket. Observing the CCTV footage of his arrival in Hexham, where he put on a face covering and took a route through back streets, indicated to her that he was fully aware of his intentions, with his sole objective being to locate Holly. She described feeling chilled to the core watching him conceal himself in trolley parks and doorways, observing and waiting for Holly, who was completely unaware of his presence. He knew precisely what he intended to do, as he did not even possess any of Holly’s belongings to return, which was the excuse he attempted to use for seeing her. During the trial, Logan MacPhail portrayed Holly as a malicious, unfaithful girlfriend with multiple boyfriends, a depiction Micala Trussler stated was far from the truth. Holly was a reserved girl who enjoyed dancing and found interactions with unfamiliar people awkward. She possessed a strong moral compass. Micala Trussler believes the only time Logan spoke truthfully was when he admitted he harmed Holly out of anger because she had not been kind to him. She noted his infrequent display of emotion, which further confirmed his truthfulness at that moment. Had Logan been truthful from the outset, he could have spared their family the trauma of a trial, allowing them to grieve for Holly sooner. The trial process demanded immense strength and composure from their family. Micala Trussler acknowledged Logan undoubtedly has his own challenges but asserted he is more capable than he has been given credit for. She described enduring months of listening to various professionals who claimed to have assessed Logan as unfit to stand trial as extremely difficult to process. She felt too many allowances were made for him during this process, and at times, watching his attempted defense unfold became farcical. She understood the court process must be fair but lamented that her daughter could not be afforded this courtesy due to his actions alone. Micala Trussler expressed profound love for her child, stating her heart aches without her. Holly was described as caring, humorous, energetic, and at times outspoken. The family has struggled to adapt to life without her, and her siblings continue to cope with significant difficulty. As a mother who has experienced the loss of a child, she stated her desire to prevent any other family from enduring the turmoil her family has suffered. Consequently, she has dedicated herself to fundraising for emergency bleed boxes. She believes that if they can assist someone suffering a catastrophic bleed and prevent another family from experiencing what they have, it makes the effort worthwhile. While Holly’s case has been categorized as knife crime, Micala Trussler stated that ensuring people know the truth about her case is one of her objectives. She firmly believes that teenagers should receive education on healthy relationships in schools and that domestic abuse services should be offered at a younger age. She suggested that perhaps then Holly might have recognized the warning signs earlier and had access to other services that could have provided assistance. She expressed her wish for Holly not to become another statistic, noting the extensive media coverage of the number of women killed by men each year, which she feels almost normalizes it for young men like Logan. She emphasized that changes must occur. As a family, they extended gratitude to those who intervened and attempted to help Holly to the best of their ability. They will never know Holly as an adult; this year, she should have been collecting her GCSE results and preparing for a prom. They will never witness her walk down the aisle or meet her children. Logan MacPhail has deprived them of the joy of future plans and seeing Holly mature into a beautiful young woman. By the time Logan has completed his sentence, he will still be able to start a family and enjoy his life, privileges Holly can no longer experience due to his senseless, selfish actions. He stabbed her daughter 36 times, in her head, chest, and back. This was not merely to injure Holly, but to kill her. The pain she must have endured breaks her heart to even contemplate. Micala Trussler concluded that more than one life was lost that night, as their hearts also ceased. Holly is missed beyond words but will never be forgotten.
