A mother from Margate has shared her daughter’s joy following the successful return of her lost toy capybara, facilitated by a supermarket employee. Mia, an eight-year-old girl with autism, was deeply distressed after her family’s shopping trip in Margate concluded without her beloved stuffed South American rodent, Rosie. Her mother, Dorota, issued an urgent appeal on Facebook, which led to a Morrisons worker identifying Rosie, who had been discovered and placed in the store’s customer services kiosk. Lizzy Clifton, a colleague at the store, connected the Facebook post with the found toy and expressed her “thrilled” sentiment at being able to reunite Mia and Rosie before Christmas. Mia had received the stuffed animal a year prior and quickly formed a profound attachment to it. Dorota elaborated on the toy’s significance, stating: “This little rodent goes everywhere her. She goes on holidays, she goes on rollercoasters, she goes to the shops, the cinema, everywhere.” She further described it as: “It’s her comfort blanket.” Upon returning home from a busy supermarket visit on November 25, the family discovered Rosie was missing. Dorota described Mia as “absolutely devastated,” noting: “She didn’t cry much but she was quiet for a good three days.” Dorota recounted sharing a post about the missing toy on Facebook, which resulted in a large number of people offering assistance. Some individuals even proposed purchasing a new capybara for Mia or donating their own stuffed animals. However, the mum-of-three explained that her daughter would immediately recognize a substitute Rosie, asserting she “would know every single little difference, even the smell.” Reflecting on the outpouring of support, Dorota added: “After all the messages I just sobbed and cried. I was just so overwhelmed with people’s kindness.” Lizzie, the supermarket worker, saw Dorota’s message and responded by sending a photograph of Rosie, safely kept behind one of the store’s counters. Lizzie commented: “I’m so thrilled we have been able to help reunite Rosie with her little owner, Mia, and in time for Christmas too!” Dorota confirmed Mia’s delight at being reunited with Rosie, concluding: “My faith in humanity has been restored.”
