Authorities have stated that a camper in Montana, whose death was initially attributed to a bear attack, was in fact murdered by an unknown individual whom he had invited to share his campsite and offered a beverage. Law enforcement officials reported that Daren Christopher Abbey, 41, has been apprehended and charged with murder following the discovery of his DNA on a beer can at the site where the victim’s remains were located. Dustin Kjersem, 35, was reportedly killed on 10 October and his body was discovered two days later by acquaintances who believed he had been attacked by a bear. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office indicated in a statement that the two individuals were previously unacquainted before their spontaneous meeting in the wilderness, and a motive for the assault remains undisclosed. Sheriff Dan Springer confirmed that Mr. Kjersem had extended an invitation to his assailant to share his campsite, situated approximately 35 miles (56km) south of the city of Bozeman. According to prosecutors, Mr. Abbey allegedly struck Mr. Kjersem with a piece of wood, subsequently stabbed him with a screwdriver, and then assaulted him with an axe. The accused reportedly revisited the scene of the crime afterward, intending to remove items from the camp that he believed could link him to the homicide, but failed to notice the beer can. Officials state that he has admitted to the killing, informing law enforcement that he assaulted his victim upon finding him at the location where he had intended to set up camp. Police reported that Mr. Abbey directed them to various items he had taken from the campsite, such as an axe, firearms, and a cooler. “This appears to be a heinous crime committed by an individual who had no regard for the life of Dustin Kjersem,” Sheriff Springer said. “We have a bit of his story, but … we don’t really know what the true story is,” Springer said. During a court appearance on Friday, Mr. Abbey was ordered to be held on $1.5m (£1.2m) bail. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
