Guernsey FC suffered a devastating 5-4 home defeat to Moneyfields in the Isthmian League South Central, conceding two goals in the final minutes of the match. Despite record goalscorer Ross Allen reaching 301 goals for the club and netting what appeared to be an 87th-minute winner for the Green Lions, his two missed penalties in a single game—a first in his Guernsey career—ultimately proved costly. Tom Cain equalized for Moneyfields from close range in the 90th minute, and James Franklyn’s deflected shot in the seventh minute of stoppage time secured the win for the visitors, marking their first lead of the game. This result leaves Guernsey in the second-from-bottom position in the league standings, six points away from safety, following their 11th loss in 16 games this season. Guernsey FC director Nic Legg expressed his disbelief to BBC Radio Guernsey, stating, “You really couldn’t make this up.” He added, “Seeing a Ross Allen missed penalty – the first penalty was saved – is a very rare thing to happen, but then to have Ross miss a second penalty as well.” Legg reflected on the team’s position, saying, “Sometimes when you see things like that you wonder whether it’s going to be your day, but even in that circumstance we were still very much in the driving seat.” He continued, “When Ross Allen scores with three minutes to go in the 87th minute and we’re 4-3 ahead you think ‘what a game’ and you’re almost celebrating the three points.” Legg concluded by describing the late turnaround: “Then to see them get the equaliser with 90 minutes on the clock and then seven minutes get added on and they somehow manage to snatch that winner it was really hard thing to take because as we started off so well.” The match saw Owen Wallbridge give the islanders an early lead in the third minute, before Marco De Sousa equalized 12 minutes later. Guernsey regained a 3-1 advantage by halftime, with goals from Matt Loaring and Charlton Gauvain, which came either side of Allen’s first missed penalty. Jafer Mahhammedkier narrowed the deficit to 3-2 after an hour of play. Allen then missed his second penalty, slipping and sending the ball over the crossbar. Mahhammedkier subsequently leveled the score for Moneyfields with eight minutes remaining. Allen then scored what he believed to be the winning goal, only for the visitors’ late scoring surge to secure their victory.
