Mohamed Salah has the potential to finalize a transfer to a different team within the next two months. Salah’s decisive goal against Brighton, which propelled Liverpool to the top of the Premier League standings, served as a pertinent illustration of the potential loss the Reds face if contract negotiations prove unsuccessful. Furthermore, a somewhat ambiguous social media post from Salah on Sunday has generated concern among some supporters. Salah, a forward, along with defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, have been foundational figures in Liverpool’s recent successful period; however, in nine weeks, all three could potentially sign agreements with other clubs, departing Liverpool as free agents. The contracts for these three players are set to expire at the conclusion of the current season, following the departure of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp from the club last season. On X, Salah posted: “Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only one champion in the end. That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.” The phrase “no matter what happens” within his statement suggests that a new contract is not a certainty. Speaking on Saturday’s BBC Match of the Day, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards stated: “They have got to sign Mo Salah up, it is imperative they give him a two-year deal.” Richards added: “He doesn’t have to play well to score goals and have big moments. That is a the difference between a very good player and a top player.” The Egyptian player, Salah, has scored 220 goals in 364 appearances, positioning him fifth on Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer list, trailing Billy Liddell by only eight goals. His most recent goal was a superb strike, curled from the right flank into the far corner, marking his 48th winning goal in the Premier League. Slot characterized the goal as “A Mo Salah special,” adding: “It’s not the first and not the last time he will score from that position.” Since his arrival at Liverpool, Salah has proven to be an exceptional player, despite previously being a winger who had not achieved 20 goals in a single season. In terms of combined Premier League goals and assists, only seven players have surpassed his total of 238 since the league’s inception in 1992. Salah and Wayne Rooney are the only players to have both scored and assisted 10 or more goals in five distinct Premier League seasons; Salah aims to hold this record outright later this campaign, having already registered six goals and five assists. Under Arne Slot, who took over from Klopp in the summer, Liverpool has secured an impressive 13 victories in 15 matches, including Saturday’s game where they recovered after Brighton dominated the first half. BBC pundit Chris Sutton commented: “They came out in the second half with a completely different attitude. That was Klopp-like intensity from Slot’s team in the second half and that could be a massive win for Liverpool.” Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring for Brighton, followed by Van Dijk assisting fellow Netherlands international Cody Gakpo for the equalizer, preceding Salah’s winning goal. Virgil van Dijk has held the captaincy of the club since Jordan Henderson’s departure. Salah, a three-time Premier League Golden Boot recipient, demonstrates his significance to the club through his substantial contributions in goals and assists. However, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold have also played crucial roles. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher stated: “We are talking about the three most influential players, alongside the goalkeeper [Alisson].” Carragher added: “They are all legendary figures at that club and it’s probably down to them this season why it has gone so well.” Despite various injuries limiting the trio to playing together in only 59% of Liverpool’s matches since Van Dijk’s £75m transfer from Southampton in January 2018, their impact is evident in the 154 victories achieved in those 221 games. This group has formed the core of one of Liverpool’s most successful teams, reaching the Champions League final three times, securing one victory, claiming their sole Premier League title, and winning an FA Cup and two League Cups. The team’s win percentage stands at 70% when all three play together, decreasing to 59% when they do not. Out of 376 matches, there have been only 14 instances where none of the three players featured, with just two of these occurring in the league. Under Klopp, Salah was Liverpool’s most frequently utilized player, followed by Alexander-Arnold in second place, and Van Dijk, currently the club’s captain, in fifth. Since his Premier League debut in December 2016, Alexander-Arnold has provided 59 league assists, ranking him fourth highest, and has created the third most chances. During this period, only James Ward-Prowse and James Maddison have scored more free-kicks than his six. Concurrently, only eight defenders have scored more Premier League goals than Van Dijk, and Liverpool’s win percentage decreases from 70% to 52% in his absence. He holds the seventh highest win percentage in the history of the Premier League. Among the three players, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the sole individual who has not yet played for another professional team. England international Alexander-Arnold, who recently discussed the significance of winning a Ballon d’Or, has been linked with Real Madrid. Salah has been associated with a potential transfer to a Saudi Arabian club since their state-funded acquisition campaign commenced last year. Liverpool declined a £150m offer for Salah in the summer of 2023, a significant decision made two years prior to his contract’s expiration. The uncertainty surrounding the contracts of three regular starters represents a somewhat uncommon situation, particularly for a club of Liverpool’s stature. However, Slot appeared relatively unconcerned about this situation during Friday’s pre-match news conference. Slot stated: “For me the contract situation could become a problem if the players don’t perform as well as they do at the moment.” He continued: “At the moment all three of them are in a good place, all of them perform really, really, really well.” Slot added: “There are ongoing discussions, as Virgil said, with the people he has to talk with, and that’s not me. I talk to him about other things.” He concluded: “Let’s wait and see but all what he said is completely right in that he doesn’t exactly know what the future will be as long as he doesn’t sign the contract yet.” Liverpool supporters interviewed by BBC Sport prior to the match expressed limited concern, with many confident that all three players would remain, though some apprehension existed regarding Salah’s potential departure for Saudi Arabia. On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Friday Football Social, former Liverpool defender Carragher suggested that Van Dijk, aged 33, and Salah, aged 32, are more probable to remain with the club than academy graduate Alexander-Arnold, aged 26. Carragher stated: “I’m pretty confident that the two older lads will sign. They are probably at the stage of their careers where it is difficult to move to a better club than Liverpool.” He continued: “I think Salah will be desperate to break as many records as he can at Liverpool.” Carragher further commented: “I think the argument will be when you are up for that last contract and it’s not really about money but length of the contracts as you get older.” He concluded: “Trent is in a different situation and that’s probably the one people are most worried with with Real Madrid potentially interested. Dani Carvajal has just done his ACL so they are probably desperate for a right-back for the next 18 months.”
