Authorities in Derby city centre have confiscated two e-bikes found to have undergone illegal modifications. Derbyshire Police officers intercepted the initial e-bike on Friday while it was being operated on St Peter’s Street. Investigations revealed it had been altered to achieve speeds exceeding 31mph (50km/h). The police force reported that a second e-bike, adapted to reach speeds of up to 30mph (48km/h), was halted on the identical pedestrianised thoroughfare on Sunday. Under current UK legislation, standard e-bikes are permitted to be ridden at speeds up to 15.5mph (25km/h) wherever pedal cycles are allowed, without the need for registration, taxation, or insurance. However, Derby City Centre neighbourhood teams stated that e-bikes altered for increased speeds are categorized as motorcycles. A spokesperson further commented: “We will take action against these machines whenever we can.” Both individuals operating the e-bikes were reported for summons due to the absence of a licence, insurance, or relevant documentation.
