A specially equipped bus, designed to offer advice and information, is set to reach families in Cumbria’s more rural regions. Named Hub2U, this initiative was commissioned by Cumberland Council following the opening of its permanent Family Hub on the Harbour in Whitehaven in April. The council stated that these hubs provide a space where children, young people, and families can access assistance for various concerns, including safety, substance abuse, and both mental and physical health. Emma Williamson from Cumberland Council remarked: “Whitehaven’s Family Hub on the Harbour was just the beginning of ensuring that the right help is available at the right time.” Beyond visiting rural communities, Cumberland Council indicated that Hub2U will also attend schools to conduct workshops and programmes. The vehicle itself was a donation from bus operator Stagecoach, and its refurbishment costs were covered by several organizations, including the social impact programme of the nuclear site Sellafield. Martin Birch, also from Cumberland Council, explained that the bus aims at “bringing services closer to where they are needed.” He added: “We are working with the community to listen to the needs of families and try to provide what really matters to them.” The council additionally plans to establish more Family Hubs in other locations across Cumbria.
