A widely recognized computer game is now enabling children throughout Wales to discover some of the nation’s historical landmarks. The creators of Minecraft have collaborated with Cadw, the Welsh historic monuments organization, and Ysgol Pennant in Powys to offer a bilingual edition of the game, accessible without charge to all schools in Wales. Conwy Castle, originating from the 13th Century, serves as the initial location included, with an additional 19 Welsh historical sites scheduled for release within the upcoming 18 months. Gwilym Hughes, head of Cadw, stated, “It really does bring those things together – the excitement of the game but also the excitement of understanding and learning about our past.” This initiative marks the first occasion children can engage with Minecraft entirely in Welsh. Manon Jones, an educator at Ysgol Pennant, contributed to the translation efforts, and students from her school were the initial group to test the new game. Ms. Jones commented, “We’ve been using Minecraft in the school in different subjects, such as history, language and the children really enjoy using it.” She added, “It’s a fun, immersive way to learn about a range of different things.” She described the creation of the Welsh language version as “really exciting.” Ms. Jones further remarked, “Not only is Minecraft now available in our first language but the project of bringing sites in Wales alive has been such an exciting part of their education… it’s been brilliant.” Following extensive learning about Conwy Castle via the Minecraft game, students from Ysgol Pennant attended the castle in person for the game’s official debut. While touring the castle with her friends, Enfys stated, “It’s very nice that we can help them to see if the game works and it’s nice that it’s in Welsh as well.” Sienna commented, “It’s amazing and really fun.” She continued, “Some children don’t really talk English and it can help a lot with their education and it can also help the people that are learning Welsh.”
